Michael Kohner

June 15, 2026 | The Toy Association™ and its members mourn the passing of Michael R. Kohner, founder of The Michael Kohner Corporation and longtime licensing executive whose career helped bring countless beloved games and toys to families around the world. He passed away on June 7 at the age of 82.

Kohner was the son of Paul Kohner and nephew of Frank Kohner, founders of Kohner Bros., the company behind classics such as Pop-O-Matic Trouble and The Busy Box. Following the sale of Kohner Bros. in 1974, Michael founded The Michael Kohner Corporation, where he spent decades working closely with inventors and international partners to bring games to market worldwide.

Throughout his career, Kohner played a role in the success of numerous products, including Loopin’ Louie, Mr. Bucket, Giggle Wiggle, Don't Panic, Pencil Nose, and Magic Tooth Fairy. He also maintained a longstanding relationship with Hong Kong-based manufacturer Longshore Ltd., helping connect inventors and their creations with game distributors across the globe.

Known for his kindness, integrity, and support of inventors, Michael carried on his family's legacy of innovation and play. In recognition of their lasting impact on the industry, Michael and the Kohner family were honored with People of Play’s Lifetime Achievement Toy & Game Innovation Excellence (TAGIE) Award in 2014.

Contributions in Kohner’s memory may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
